Junior

Junior is the division of Little League baseball for 13-14 year olds.  Junior rules allow players to lead off and steal bases.

Most Junior players are 14 year olds who have played 1 year of 50/70 and/or 13 year old players who are playing on a 60/90 field in USSSA. It is not recommended for players who played Majors in the previous year. For those players, we suggest they play one year of 50/70 as a step up between the 46/60 field and the 60/90 field.

Season:

The Junior season will begin around the first or second week of April. (Practices will begin approximately two – three weeks before their first game, weather permitting). The players then play an average of two games per week (working around Memorial Day) for a total of 10 – 12 games.  This season begins and ends earlier than lower Little League divisions in order to complete the season prior to school baseball beginning. Home games will be played at Sam Wise Sports Complex, and will consist of players combined between Altoona, Pleasant Hill, Mitchellville and Runnells Little Leagues. Games are played on a high school sized field (60/90). This division is supported at the district level for scheduling. Interleague play is required within Central Iowa’s District 3 boundaries and dependent upon which leagues are able to support the juniors division each year. Games are 7 innings in length and follow high school rules.

All-Stars:

All players living within the Southeast Polk Little League boundaries, or attending a school within the boundaries, will be eligible for All-Stars. Teams are decided based on coach nominations and a voting process. If picked for All-stars the player will be expected to be available for practices and games from late June through mid to late July (depending on how far they get in the tournament).

Uniform:

A jersey and hat will be provided.  Players should check with their coach for the color of baseball pants they will need.  Players will need cleats.

Glove

  • Players are required to have a glove

Balls

  • Southeast Polk Little League will provide the balls for practice and games

Bats

  • Players at the Junior level should provide their own bats
  • ALL LITTLE LEAGUE BATS MUST MEET LITTLE LEAGUE’S “USA BASEBALL BAT STANDARDS”

    • Bats shall not be more than 34 inches in length, nor more than 2 5/8 inches in diameter at its smallest part
      • If wood, not less than 15/16 inches in diameter (7/8 inch for bats less than 30″) at its smallest part
      • Wood bats taped or fitted with a sleeve may not exceed 18 inches from the small end.
    • Bats must have the “USA Bats” logo to be approved for Little League Play
    • Exceptions to the USA Bats requirement for the Juniors division are as follows:
      • Note 1: Solid one-piece wood barrel bats do not require a USA Baseball logo in the Juniors Division
      • Note 2: Bats meeting the Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) performance standard are allowed in the Junior Division.  Such bats shall be so labeled with a silkscreen or other permanent certification mark.
        • The certification mark shall be rectangular, a minimum of a half-inch on each side and located on the barrel of the bat in any contrasting color.
        • Aluminum/alloy and composite bats shall be marked as to their material makeup being aluminum/alloy or composite.
          • This marking shall be silkscreen or other permanent certification mark, a minimum of one-half-inch on each side, and located on the barrel of the bat in any contrasting color.
    • No bats baring the “USSSA” decal are allowed for Little League Play.

Batting Helmets

  • At the Junior Level the player should provide their own batting helmet to provide for a better fit
  • Because of safety regulations, Southeast Polk Little League and all affiliated leagues are required to provide batting helmets in case a player forgets theirs
